The submarine USS Bowfin made nine patrol runs during WWII, all packed with hair-raising adventures. In the course of sinking some 175,000 tons of Japanese shipping, Bowfin faced an increasingly sophisticated Japanese anti-submarine campaign and endured vicious depth bomb and surface attacks. The boat aided guerrillas in the Philippines, hunted in wolfpacks, rescued downed flyers, and scourged the Japanese throughout the war under the command of various colorful skippers. The Bowfin has been restored and is berthed next to the USS Missouri at Pearl Harbor.

The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors (Military History)

This is the remarkable story of the tiny US Fleet that staged the greatest upset victory in the history of naval warfare. Facing sure destruction off the Philippines at the hands of a massive Japanese fleet that included the most powerful battleship ever built, the Yamato, 7 over matched US destroyers & destroyer escorts (or "tincans" in Navy speak) charged the Japanese head on. In the Battle of Samar, a steel shattering 2-hour daylight surface engagement, the last ever fought, the task unit known as "Taffy 3" saved Gen. Douglas MacArthur's invasion force and at a cost of 5 stout ships and 850 sailors etched its name in US Navy legend.
