A ship with a long illustrious legacy, the name was passed along Navy surface ships from the War of 1812 thru the Mexican War, and then eventually given to submarines beginning in WWI. During WWII, the name landed on a unique sub equipped with 2 six inch guns designed to combat destroyers and cruisers, yet beg enough to be assigned to deliver massive amounts of cargo to Marine raiders. From 1951 thru 1979 the replacement USS Nautilus completed numerous successful voyages, including sailing under the polar icecap.

This is the remarkable story of the tiny US Fleet that staged the greatest upset victory in the history of naval warfare. Facing sure destruction off the Philippines at the hands of a massive Japanese fleet that included the most powerful battleship ever built, the Yamato, 7 over matched US destroyers & destroyer escorts (or "tincans" in Navy speak) charged the Japanese head on. In the Battle of Samar, a steel shattering 2-hour daylight surface engagement, the last ever fought, the task unit known as "Taffy 3" saved Gen. Douglas MacArthur's invasion force and at a cost of 5 stout ships and 850 sailors etched its name in US Navy legend.
